Pickups (what do people suggest)

Post  Admin on Tue Jul 12, 2011 7:42 am

As we are all players of Vintage guitars I suppose most of us swear by good old Trev Wilkinsons pickups but if you have swapped them out for other brands, what have you used?

I changed the Wilkinson humbuckers in my V100BK to an IronGear Rolling Mill humbucker (bridge) and an IronGear Alchemist P90 (neck). The P90 did not require any modifications as it's humbucker sized thus a straight swap. I was pretty impressed by the sound of these things. You can check them out here:

Very reasonable prices too. You can buy them from here:

I have been looking at the Blues Engine for my V100, as I wanted it to sound really old school. But they are double price from the Wilkinson PAF, so now I have been hesitating between getting one or the other.

I was thinking about a pair of Rolling Mills or one Rolling Mill (neck) and one Hot Slag (bridge) for my VRS100.

Has anyone compared these with the hot Wilkinson pickups? Are they worth the double price?

I've used a lot of IronGear pickups and I've always been impressed by the sound. The seller is always really helpful too.

I put that combination in my Pre-Wilkinson Cherry burst V100 I also updated the wiring added new pots coil tap and some killer russian caps......

Whilst they sound great and the Hot Slag is certainly hotter than any of Trev's pups
I prefer them marginally to the newer V100 pups
But I think that the nickel cover pups in the Lemon drop are fantastic and beat the v100 and Iron gear pups......
I don't know if the 'buckers are different in the Lemon drop than the V100 or if its just the nickel covers and wiring but my Lemon drop sings like no-other.....

I have to agree that the newer Wilkinson pups are great. Any new humbucker loaded Vintage I bought would probably be left stock, with maybe some changes to the innards (wire, pots etc).

I've heard the VV60, Vintage's take on the flying V, and the stock pickups are absolutely killer!

GFS Humbucker size P90s

Post  rev48 on Wed Jul 13, 2011 6:19 pm

These pups are worth looking at if you fancy replacing one of your ‘buckers with a P90 or 2
You probably know Gary Moore signature LP features a P-90 and a Humbucker
The Dream and Mean P-90s are excellent value at around £20 each
As you know modding a Humbucker guitar to fit soapbar P90s is not an easy option these offer an easy replacement for any Humbucker…..

Bareknuckle pickups always get rave reviews. In fact, the guy who owns/runs the company has been in talks with my fathers band about playing guitar for them. My old man plays drums for Budgie (has done since the 70's) Anyone heard of them?

I have a squier strat, and have noticed on the net in different places where people have replaced the bridge pup for somthing a bit more of a beefy sound.

Any reccomendations, cause for someone with my inexperience, its a little confusing.

For a beefy sound you could get a humbucker that's the same size as a single coil pickup. There are a lots of brands making hot rails type pickups. As well as sounding fatter they also cancel the noise you get from a single coil. Take a look at this link to get a better idea.

Axetec Jailhouse rail pickups

I swear by the Gibson 490/498 pickup set. The reason being, that they are the stock pickup in a lot of Gibson guitars. I have heard of many people changing them out for the "flavour of the month" aftermarket pickups, only to put them back in.
They usually have a about a 7.5 to 8 in the neck and a 12.5 to 13 in the bridge. For me they are the sweetest pickups that Gibson makes. And the biggest thing is that they are usually readily available for very little money. If you get a chance to pick some up cheap, they are excellent choices to put into a budget guitar. They will usually be around the same price as the cheaper off brand sets, but will out perform them.
